Captain Mathew McCullers Cemetery
A sacred historic sanctuary in Wake County, preserving the final resting place of Captain Mathew McCullers and his descendants. We maintain these grounds as a permanent testament to our Revolutionary heritage.

Two Centuries of Heritage
This sacred ground serves as the final resting place for early Wake County militia Patriot Mathew McCullers and his descendants. Each weathered marker represents a vital thread in the early American tapestry, preserved today through meticulous archival research and physical restoration.
An area of unmarked graves lies between the family tombstones and the grave of Sam McCullough. These graves are believed to include people who were enslaved. Their names and the total number of graves have not yet been established.
The Brunswick County Search and Rescue Team surveyed the cleared area with cadaver dogs and identified approximately 10 to 12 possible unmarked graves. Some locations have large field stones, and GPS coordinates were recorded. The team also indicated possible graves in the wooded area toward Donny Brook Road. After some clearing, additional unmarked graves were found west of Sam McCullough’s grave.
Large and small trees and dense undergrowth have obscured or damaged parts of this area over time. The cemetery group plans another survey after more clearing is complete.
If you have information about the people buried in these unmarked graves, please share it with the cemetery group.
